Financial forms and calculator on a dark desk

The misconception

“Your income directly affects your credit score.”

The explanation

Income is not a factor in any major credit-scoring model. Your score is calculated from payment history, credit utilization, length of credit history, types of credit in use, and recent credit inquiries. Lenders may consider income separately during their own approval process, but it does not appear in the score itself.

A score is not the entire lending decision

A credit score and a lender’s approval process have different roles. The score reflects credit history; a lender may consider other information separately when evaluating an application.

Know what the number describes

Payment history, utilization, account age, credit mix, and recent inquiries are the core subjects covered in our educational resources. Understanding these factors helps put the score in context without treating it as a complete picture of your finances.
